Hi All,
I have a TREK 6000 which I bought in Mid Feb 2007, so its currently only 7months old and the past few weeks, I have noticed that the front suspension has gone quiete hard and not that response. Also the adjusters on the top of the forks for adjusting its springness as gone solid so I cant turn the dial.
Also the brakes have gone sort of spongey and no where near as responsive/sharp as they used to.
First question is when should a bike have a service? I ride mine about 2/3 times a week, doing abought 35miles a week.
Also if I wanted a full strip down and rebuild, as in all bearings regreased and forks re-done how much should this cost to have done by a repair centre?
Thanks for your time and look forward to responses.
Tom

Should certainly have had some sort of service by now, or a check over and adjustment. You can actually void your warranty by not doing this.
Full strip and servie about 50 pounds, maybe a bit more for the fork as well.0 -
Hi,
Thanks for the response.
When I bought it, I went back after 6 weeks and they checked it over.
Just is seems really that everything is incorrect or not right, as in the brakes, the forks and the gears, cant go onto the highest cog on the crank.
I was thinking about that price range, but thought I bike should go a good year without anything like that, other than a little oil...0 -
Not at all! Bikes need a good maintenance regime, and a check over once a week usually: clean, adjust bolts, oil, adjust parts. If not, they get steadily worse! Maintenance is part and parcel of having a bike: uyou may benefit from a book like Leonard Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance.0

Yes I can understand that they need checking over now and then.. First problems came really when first had it I used to wash after every ride as new and looking after it and think water got into areas and washed out oil etc.
Will take a look at the book recommendation.
Thanks!0 -
my 9 month old bike is about to go for its first shop service, Ive been lucky enough to wait this long because of all the advise ive got from the shop and the quick once over it was given when I went in to buy some bits and bobs last.
I found that keeping a good relaitionshop with your LBS leads to them looking after you and helping you keep your bike in mint condition.
if you wantto know how to do stuff look at park tools or another website.
I think you shouldnt be afraid to ask the LBS when you are there either if you need to know how to do something with your bike.Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)

I check mine after every ride, Tightness of everything, wheels, cranks, headset and so on, i put it in my work stand and give it a quick spin through every gear, i lube everything every couple of rides, and give everything a full clean every other week, on a major clean i strip most parts of the bike so as to get into all the nooks and crannys, keeps everything running perfect and well worth the effort.0

Thank you Paul Sh. I was worried because I do pretty much the same as you. Was getting worried for a little while...
Oh, and it is ok to admit that I go to my LBS and tinker with other peoples bikes when not tinkering with mine? :oops:jedster wrote:Just off to contemplate my own mortality and inevitable descent into decrepedness.

edinburgh cycles have quoted me £80 for a full service! is this alot to pay? and thats before they even replace anything (if need be) i'm tempted to pay it as most of the time they do a good job, but half of methinks it's a bit much for a service........Any thoughts!
For reference i live in the newcastle/sunderland area so if anyone knows of any really good LBS's in that area and that would be cheaper i'd really appreciate the suggestions.0 -
I'm sorry but there is no way in a million years i would pay someone £80.00 to fix my bike let alone service it, i'm in Newcastle, you could try Steels in Gosforth , Dixons in Whitley Bay or the Cycle Center in North Shields. TBH, at those prices it's time for a little DIY.0

STEELS! i bought my bike from steels about 5 months ago. i recieved 3 free services along with it....it's been in for one already and to be honest it came out worse than when it went in!! A few people have told me to keep well away frm there for servicing my bike......they don't even touch the forks!! which do need looking at actually.
I would love to be able to do it all myself but just don't have the time at the minute.0 -
Not many places will touch the forks, can be specialist jobs. Apart from lubing the seals.0

just don't seem as responsive as when i got them at first......and the preload dial is jammed!! i only moved it once!! seems like i'mnot gettin as much travel as i should be.
can't remember exactly what model the forks are but i've got a spesh rockhopper comp 07 if that helps......the forks are definatly rockshocks ones tho0 -
Sounds like a Tora 302 coil. The dial needs freeing, but the spring may be wrong for weight. Have you oiled the seals? They need servicing as per the instructions 0 servicing isnt free though.0
-
had a look at the forks and there are rockshocks recon's. what oil do i use to lube the seals? where are the seals???? to froo up the dial is it just a case of taking a spanner to it....it's hexed round the outer diameter so was thinking of going down that route with the spanner.0

Its all in the instructions, downloadable from SRAM if you don't have them.0
