Transporting a second bike

I was wondering... is there any safe way of transporting / towing a second bike? I've seen people riding bikes with another alongside, which one hand for each bike, but I tried doing such a thing in my youth and I seem to remember it being rather tricky and fally-offy. I was wondering if one could attach the front wheel or forks of a second bike to one's rear rack, and tow it that way... anyone had any luck with that kind of thing?

I know you can tow other bikes in a trailer, but I'm not sure my eBay special child trailer is up to it...
