£400 to spend on commuting and leisure...?

I'm fed up of using the tube to get to work, and I'm keen to get fit. So I want a mountain bike to carry me the 16 mile daily round trip - weather permittimng of course.
I can spend around £400, not including accessories (such as helmet, lights, pump, bottle, road tyres, mud guards).
My limited research points me towards Specialized Hard Rock, GT avalanche 2, and Trek 4500 - but perhaps you guys have a more expert opinion on the best value bike in that bracket. This will be my first, so I have no allegiance to any paricular brand.
I'd also like to use it off-road - perhaps every other weekend, but nothing to serious. I'm not keen on a hybrid bike for this reason.
I've read a lot of people buy from Evans, I guess because of good service, but can you also recommend alternatives.
Your comments are appreciated. Cheers.

thanks - interesting that none of mine were mentioned, but there's just so much choice out there.0

Just today I bought a 2008 White GT avalanche 2.0 disc. £400 sheets with free helmet and pump. Its Light, white and Brilliant !
Have a go, you wont be disappointed.0 -
The Trek and Gt were mentioned in that thread. Hardrock usually to be avoided as very heavy, awful fork and low rent parts.0

GT looks nice, but they all do to me.
When you're new to this, the spec lists are baffling - that's where this forum lark is a god send.
That's a negative on the HardRock then!
I did see a trek 6500 (2006) reduced to £399.99, but what can you buy for a penny these days0 -

GT Avalanche 2.0 - is that a standard bike, or did you change some parts? Looks real nice.0 -
Best thing you can do is go and see them in the fles - have a sit on them, or a short ride. You need to make sure it suits you and you get the right size.
Trek 4500 would be a the top of my list. Light, great spec and good fork.0 -
good advice, thanks, will check out evans tomorrow.0
