Bad Indexing

I really cant get my rear derailleur to index properley, its close but not great.
I am usually pretty good at getting these things set up, having done years of road biking. but this one has me a bit flumoxed.
I can get the barrel adjuster tight enough so it whips up the cassette fast shifting and clean as a whistle, but then it hesitates like mad on the way down the cassette and sometimes wont do the shift at all. So you would think that it has too much cable tension, however it doesnt rattle on the next sprocket up, suggesting too much cable tension. And when you do take a tiny bit of cable tension off, it wont make the shift properly and skips two sprockets at a time when coming down the cassette ?????
All the parts are stock and nothing has been changed as the bike is only 9 months ish old
Its a XT rear mech which seems fine
The hanger is straight and hasnt been crash damaged
The only possible thing is gear cables ? However I dont know how possible this is as the bike hasnt been used that much, however it has stood for about 6 months ? Could stiction in the cables bee responsible for the poor down shifting.
Like I say, everything is stock, it worked like clockwork whilst new and has only recently been shifting poorly.

clean or replace the cables."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

as said cables are probaby dry and dragging, also, lube the pivots and spring in the mech and lube the shifter too.FCN 120

Spend the money (~20 squid) on XTR gear cables and make sure you loop the rear cable with a big enough radius.0

I've had the same symptoms as you, poor indexing etc, as stated above, change the cables. I changed mine on saturday to XTR's, boy what a difference they have made!!Scott Scale Custom

Based on the information here I bought some XTR gear cable and installed them this weekend, and lo and behold the whole problem was completely solved. I wont spend so long scratching my head for a solution next time.0
