Swapping bar-ends for brifters

I've got a Dawes Galaxy that i use a commuter. The bike is great - sturdy rather than fast - but does the job with aplomb.
Ever since I had it the bar-end shifters would every now and then get bashed by my knee when climbing out of the saddle. No biggie but it's starting to p*ss me off.
Is it possible to get rid of the bar end shifters and swap out for brifters without spending a fortune?

How many gears? Do you have the barrel adjusters on the downtube that are required?0

It's nine gears at the back and three rings at the front. The derailler is indexed the front clanger is friction.
I'll have to have a look for the barrell adjusters.
I really appreciate the help guys.

If you have the barrel adjusters then it will be no problem. Alternatively, you can fit some of these.0

Any approx cost for the shifters/replacement brakes?0
