I've just signed up with a discounted bike purchase scheme through work and will be getting £700 voucher to spend on a bike at Halfords (not ideal LBS I know) - the last bike I bought was a £200 Ridgeback and it was rubbish - I would appreciate some decent advice please!

Anyway, at the moment I'm torn between the Banshee 'X', Fury and Boarman Comp. The Banshee 'X' seems to be the regular Banshee plus upgraded bits from the Fury. I'm not sure about the Boardman, mainly because it feels like a big marketing gimmick.

I don't mind spending the whole lot on just the bike and buying any extras on top but dont want to spend an extra £200 on the Banshee over the Fury if it isn't worth it!

I'll mainly be riding offroad at my local Army ranges, so the bike will need to be able take some reasonable punishment, I should also add I'm 6ft 6" and 17 stone!

Many thanks for any replies in advance

First things first, the Banshee is a totally different bike from the Fury - full suspension, a lot heavy, slacker angles and longer travel - built for hard riding and light 'freeride'. The Fury and Boardmans are classic XC/trail bikes. much lighter. Don't let the name on the Boardman put you off, this is one well thought out bike. however its quite a light and narrow frame...

How about the GT Aggressor XCR?
  • Thanks - I wasn't that taken with the GT in the shop but I will have another look.

When you say hard riding, the main area I use is a tank range, so some steepish downhill bits with the odd moderate jump. As I say I had a Rigeback which wasn't up to the job and I really don't want to make the same mistake again!

Usually weight isnt too much of an issue for these bikes, but of course it does accelerate wear and tear. Just have to be on the ball with maintenance, and I'd certainly budget for some tools and a guide.

The XCR has a tougher frame and parts than than the Boardman and Fury, well worth a test if you can.
