I wish to convert a MTB bottom bracket'ed chieftain mk2 set to a BMX bottom bracket version, as I now have a frame with a bmx bottom bracket.

Is this possible by simply purchasing new cups + bearings from chain reaction, or are there other more subtle differences. I couldnt work out if there are different axle sizes?

Any help will be gratefully recieved. :D

bmx bb set including the spacer for between the bearings. if gears same axel, if SS then the 145mm axle.

  • Thanks for the reply. What is the spacer for, are the bearings not fully located in the cups, which in turn are fully located in the frame? Can I not use the one from the MTB set up?

Last thing, are you saying that there are two different axle widths depending if you have gears or not? I didnt know there was that option, I thought you just got spacers.

Thanks again for your help :D

you need to support the inner races. no the mtb one wont work.

axles 145mm bmx. abd 156mm for mtb there is also a 165 for 83mm bbs. (not dmr though).

but that will not work with your cranks as yours are 36 splined.

you could just use you current set up with wonder/ A-cups

  • Oh my god your right! Why is it so difficult. I keep wrecking the bearings on them as the profile is far too small, and I generally dont like the set up. My bmx has a mid bottom bracket and it works so much better. I guess I'll just buy some new cranks it will probably be cheaper and easier

    Thanks!

the gusset cranks are the same. just look for the gusset bmx bb kit and axle spacer.

    CRC or billiys.co.uk
