And a guaranteed entry to the TdF for Agritubel, who were absolutely pants in this year's race.

:o:o:o How does he do it? Anyone know if he's had to take a pay cut as he is definetly past his sell-by date.
Look on the bright side though he's always good for a laugh, as he goes off a la Verinque on another fruitless attack. :D:D

that's a bit harsh... he's just had one of his best seasons in years
  • Mmm - hasn't he been pointed out as having climbed better than Contador by Mr Bruynel?
Has one a few races this year too, unlike other years. He's obviously very good at peaking for teh right races!
  • Good luck to him, he deserved better than being dropped in this years tour by a drug fuelled Astana team.

He's an interesting rider. Mentally very fragile, constantly in need of praise and reassurance. No doubt he's one of France's best riders, one of the few to he beat Armstrong in a TdF time trial (when he was chez Festina  ) but this year he had a very strong summer, winning the Dauphiné, the French champs and he was good in the Alps, he could have tried to attack more on the day Rasmussen was up the road.

Agritubel have got a rider to generate plenty of publicity for them, even if he doesn't win much, and for a seemingly small team, they're all but guaranteed a start in the Tour.

If he climbed faster than Contador, it was on a different climb, in a different race. Contador's VAM was on the final climb after two weeks of racing and he did the start of the climb slowly and then picked up the pace towards the top, Moreau was on the penultimate climb 5 days into a shorter race and he went hard from the start. It's not comparable, just a sly slur from Bruyneel who was firing huge rocks from the comfort of his glass house.

Sound like he will be doing a warm-down year with a lesser team ahead of retirement.

Climbing rates are a pretty useless metric - it's awfully dependent on the gradient.

On a 1% gradient you'd have to cycle at 100 kph to climb 1km per hour

On a 10% climb the average speed needs to be about 10 kph which is much easier - most of us could probably average that with suitable gearing

On a 15% climb it goes down to 6.7 kph

You have to compare similar climbs. So no wonder the highest climbing rates are set on the long, steep climbs like the Zoncolan at this year's Giro

According to reports on www.cyclingnews.com today, it's more to do with his increased wage demands than anything else. AG2R can't afford him anymore.

See what the good doctor himself says about VAM and gradient

So let me get this straight. The good doctor says there are dozens of variables to take into account - climb length, steepness, the weight of the rider, the power output, the road surface, the weather, the amount of hairpins, the strength of the team, the length of the race, the race tacticts... and so on.

So remind me again how is it valid to compare Contador's climb with Moreau's?!
