Oxidised splash stain on chain rings and front mech.

My 5 month old Allez has splash marks on the Sora front gear system which I can't remove by washing with detergent or white spirits. The marks have turned the shiny metal surface into a whitish oxidised colour.
I think it may have happened when riding past a building site where the main road was wet on a sunny day. I try to keep the bike clean and not to ride it when it's raining so it's quite annoying that this has happened. I've ridden my MTB commuter in all types of conditions and all the shiny surfaces are fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to remove them, as it's putting me off washing the bike? I've though about using metal polish, but thought I better get advice first.

For things like that I use those green pan-scouring sponges with the white pads for NON STICK surfaces. They remove a lot of stubborn marks without damaging most surfaces...still go easy to start with though!
