Bar and seatpost diameters

Hi
Newb question
I'm considering shaving some weight off my Trek 4500 with some lighter components off 'that auction site'.
All the item descriptions state various diameters and lengths.
I currently have the stock Bontrager finishing kit (Bontrager Select, I think) and I have seen a few bits of higher end gear but can't buy with confidence.
Is there a rule of thumb for most manufacturers or is every manufacturer and every bike different?
Any help appreciated.

measure you parts.
there are a number of different sizes for everything."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

well bars are 25,4 or 31,8 as standard.
and seat post vary by 0,2mm but normally say on them. take it out and clean and read."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Additional to nick's advice on seatposts is that the size must match to 0.2mm.
If you have a 27.2mm post now, you need a 27.2mm replacement. Bigger won't fit and even if you can get a smaller one to stay tight, the extra stress on the seat cluster area is very likely to crack the frame.John Stevenson0
