Hi,

Currently have a SR Suntour XCR fork on my GT Avalanche 2 disc.
I'm thinking about upgrading to the Rock Shox Tora 302.
This one: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=18132

Would this be a step in the right direction? Is it better than the Suntour XCR?

Your thoughts / experiences with these forks are welcome. :)

Cheers,
Skitz

  • Yes - a step in the right direction.

For the money Tora's are untouchable and exceptional value......
  • I've just got the '302 U-Turn' forks and, although I've only managed to have one day of riding with them so far, they made such a big difference to my riding (I need all the help I can get).

They're still at the 'bedding-in' stage, but the handling etc. was far superior to my previous forks (Judy TT).

  • I feel this is a bad idea i had two sets and wrecked the damping on both so they went crap n topped out loads. Anything more than tame xc they will not like.
  • Not what I wanted to hear! :?

Ive got a pair of 302's on my 07rockhopper, which i found to be very good, both on the road and climbing (lockout on) between sections, and running down Northface/Llangdela etc. Certianly miles better than the Marzoci MZcomps on my 05hardrock.
    - However, see my current thread for a possable issue with the damping on the forks.

  • How did you break the damping? What weight are you?

Ive thrashed my Toras, not even hicuuped. I think Andy was just unlucky, or a faulty batch.
  • i've given my 2006 302's a good thrashing on my 2006 marin alpine trail, "aggressive xc", medium dh a bit of jumping. i'm not very kind to them but i've had zero problems so far very happy with them.

Well, i didnt break it. It broke...

Dont know what happened andys, but mine just died from one day to the next.
    - Its was fine last time i took it out, then last night there was just nothing, so its back to the shop with them then. Im about 16stone i think.
    - But sereously, there where pritty dam good for the money when they where going, and im hoping for a full service/replacement job on them and get back up and go.

I've got a set of U-turns. The bike came with the non U-turn fork. I broke the lockout within a few miles of riding. Rock Shox replaced the fork with a set of U-turns after waiting 4 weeks when the best part of the summer was over and just in time for me to go back to work

I can't give comment on performance as I'm not back to riding and have nothing to compare the forks to. Once set up they feel nice for XC, maybe could be a bit lighter though.

The standard spring that comes with the Toras are rated up to 72kg, about 11 stone. The damper might of been trying to compensate for what the spring should of been doing.
