Good Framebuilder for commuting bike

I've been looking round the net for framebuilders and have quite a few names to contact and ask for prices, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience and recommendations?
I've been putting my own commuting bikes together for years now, using MTB frames as I like the sturdyness and position. But they always have way too much clearance around the stays (I've never come across that much filth on London roads...well...no, that's a different story
). So, what I really want to see about, is a hybrid type frame for 26 inch wheels. Shorter stays for faster acceleration.
Of course, when the wife hears of this, it'll all be on the back burner, but at least i'll know who to try when i've got more money than I know what to do with (Just typing that makes me wonder if that'll ever happen...it's a dream, I suppose)
