No stop markings at light - okay to RLJ?

On part of my route, I cross Holloway road in North London, at a place it's only possible to cross on bike and on foot. A cycle path goes up to a traffic light, except it is one of the pedestrian-style ones that you hit a button for to request. I think it is linked to a pedestrian crossing a few yards down the road.

The thing is, I noticed today that there are no give way or stop markings on the cycle path at all. Does that mean that I can legally cross the road on red if it is safe to do so?

The crossing in question is here on google maps, but the aerial photo isn't that great.

Unless it is a cycle only crossing I don't believe it is actually illegal to cross.

i.e. little red men and little red cycles are advisory not legal traffic control. See the Cambridge Cycle Campaign website where the issue is discussed. It seemed to be implying that all traffic lights have a full round red light (and perhaps patterns on the amber or green).
Training, highway design and increasing cycle numbers are important to safety. Helmets are just a red herring.
  • If I recall correctly, the red is a full circle, not a little red bicycle.

From 2002 but the HC seems to still have the same distinction. Cycle only crossings are trrafic regulation. Toucan ones are not.

64: Do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your cycle across.

65: Toucan crossings. These are light-controlled crossings which allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross at the same time. They are push button operated. Pedestrians and cyclists will see the green signal together. Cyclists are permitted to ride across.

66: Cycle-only crossings. Cycle tracks on opposite sides of the road may be linked by signalled crossings. You may ride across but you MUST NOT cross until the green cycle symbol is showing.

The author of the camcycle article thinks that is significant and indicates a proper traffic control.

The lack of a stop line is interesting though and could be a mistake by the council.

  • If it's safe with no pedestrians around - go ahead, if not walk your bike.
