I had my first P since starting back on the bike last night

So: top tips for prevention: bike no.1 has a Schwalbe Marathon at the back, regular tyre at the front, 27*1.25 each, Bike no.2 has Specialized regular tyres front and back, 700*28

What is best prevention:
1. Do nothing, hope for the best, avoid broken bottles, etc
2. Bullet proof tyres - if so, which? The Marathon is a bit of a beast, rather too heavy duty for my bike 2 (Sirrus with narrow SKS guards)
3. Slime (as used on the kids' buggy...!)

Ta

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Top tip from me has to be check and recheck the pressures, keep ‘em high. No punctures for a year, 3 in the last week over 2 bikes. Common fault, got sloppy with checking the pressure. Definitely a contributory factor on 2
  • Secret Sam,

Sorry for the bad Karma :!:

Only my p second in a year on this steed, the tyres were up around 100psi as I'd done a "road event" at the weekend, usually run around 90.

Bad day didn't stop there, my track pump finished inflating my semi mini-pump inflated rear when I got home tonight, then by the time I'd carried it to the kitchen to blow up the tube with the 2 holes  in it the damn thing decide to pack in and only blow air out of the larger "car" type hole :(

A bit of angry persuasion later and it was playing ball.

I was angry as a numpty in a C-Max deliberately tried to block my passage at the last moment on a wide main road. Probably peed off as I'd beaten him over 4 miles from Beeston to Toton! - Get a bike sucker!

Had my bad Karma over the last 2 weeks with 3 punctures.

Fed my positive karma balance this morning. Spotted someone at roadside, stopped, broken chain. "Got a powerlink?", "No?", "I have!"

2 mins later the guys up and running. Had a nice feeling all day from being able to help. Helpings its own reward. :):)
  • Gambatte,

    Good on you mate!

When I had my (p) early this week I dropped my wheel out and held it up in the air, after about 3 minutes I realised that the support car must have been stuck at the back so had to change the tube myself!

Think I've been watching too much ToF, ToB and CyclingTV.

I got a p*uncture on the way home last night but luckily I was just near the LBS on Jamaica Road. I needed a new tyre anyway and the guy replaced it in minutes. It was great (nothing like Evans, where they always say "leave it with us and it'll be ready at 6 o'clock tomorrow evening") - I'll definitely be going there again next time I need anything done to my bike.

That's a good route for beating motor vehicles! I used to go between Long Eaton and University Boulevard, although those days are passed...

I had to change my rear tyre recently - I went for a Specialized Armadillo which has been fine so far but still early days. Evans recommended the Armadillo (which probably means that they didn't have anything else in stock).

Last year or the year before, I had a spate on my front and one the rear, changed the rear to after that Armadillo and touch wood I've not had once since :?

Secretsam, Think schwalbe marathon tyres are good but the marathon plus is even better at puncture protection.Used them last winter over 6000 miles and only had one puncture. Cost around £24 each but are discounted if you buy a pair on some websites

is it soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside?

  • I had a spate of them a while back, but I threatened the wheels with Gator Skins if they didn't start behaving and I've not had one since.

Nah they're still solid about 85psi

No idea why changing the rear seemed to affect the front

  • I run two sets of tires on my bike.

I have an old set I cut about 3 inchs out of and cut off te eside walls, then I put one inside each new tire, seems to have made them reasonably p******e proof.

    And 45 psi as well.

Reminds me of an old story about a land rover in Kenya. Massive thorns meant punctures every day. What they did was run a smaller tyre inside the outer tyre and low pressure. Thorns punctured the outer tyre, but couldnt puncture the inner tyre. Slippage between the 2 meant as soon as it started to pass into the inner one, it snapped.
