Hello !

Pretty new to this - so please bear with me !!

My girlfriend has got a Giant 4.5 XTC (?) which has Giants own brand MPH hydraulic brakes fitted.

I've got a problem with the brake lever

The actual brake lever is kept in position (in the bit that is secured to the bars !!) by a ball & socket fitting.

This seems to have come loose / broken (?) and now every time she lets go of the lever quickly (almost flicking the brake on & off) the ball comes out of its socket - so making the brake lever unless - so then we have to stop - but the ball back in the socket & set off again.

This is beggining to bug me !!

So - anyone know a soloution to get the lever to stay in position ? Or is it simply a case of buying a brand new lever, which I don't want to do as they cost £65.00 !!!

Anyone have any knowledge of this brake lever assembly ?

Would really appreciate some help here !!

Cheers

Used to happen to mine all the time. If I remember rightly there is some sort of circlip or washer arrangement which holds the ball in the housing. It's really fiddly to put back together and after a few fixes it won't stay in any longer owing to wear in the housing.

Sorry I can't be more specific but it was a while ago. The levers are often available on ebay, I think Hope C2 levers may be used as a replacement.

I ended up buying a cheap set of avid juicy 3's in the end.
  • what you have is actually a common problem with the mph levers. these have been a warrantee nightamare for us. you need to go to your lbs and ask for the giant mph push pin kit. they will kow you mean as they will probably have ordered plenty in their time. if you look at the 2008 mph brakes you will see that giant has changed the mgh. the lever has a similar look to the avid lever and the caliper is a copy of the now defunct hayes trail. the push pin kit should come with a brass washer and the small bolt that has a bell end on it.(insert joke now) you can fit them yourself in around five minutes if you have the right tools or have them do it for as it should only cost around a fiver to fit

I had the same prob with a giant acid , push pin kit costed about £8 per side and you need a pair of circlip pliers to fit it, its a bit fiddly but fairly simple, if it doubt get your LBS to do otherwise you may have to by another kit if you damage it (mainly the brass washer).
