Hi all

what do you all use to keep the mud from flying ? With the oncoming wet weather I am wondering what are the best mudguards on the market ? and if you have any pictures of them fitted. I've just got a Boardman comp and not been out in the wet yet  (new to mountain biking) Any advise welcome.

I use to have a crud catcher on the front of my bike, which was pretty good. It doesnt fit properly on my newer frame so I don't use it anymore.

I use front and read crud catchers which are great.

You still get some mud on you but its a lot less then you would usually and they do make sure you don't sit down with a soaked rear and face so muddy you can no longer see.

I'm paranoid about getting grit in my eyes so I use Halfords Dirt Monkey Fork mounted Front and seat mounted Rear guards... and riding glasses.... Not had any dirt on the glasses yet....

Not bought a front guard yet either, think I'm going to go for one like this when winter arrives: http://www.cyclebasket.com/products.php ... 589&i=2162 but need to take front wheel off (and rotate bars) to transport my bike so might end up just going with a down tube fixing type (even though the fork mount ones are generally quick release I can see it being annoying...)

  • Hi nferrar

Thats shockingly cheap m8 :o I'm not sure if I should get a fork mounted or frame mounted ?? some of the fork mounted ones can look a bit OTT I think .

  • Currently looking for a front mudguard aswell. The crud catcher isn't big enough as some of the spray comes off the tire just in front of the fork. Most of the full ones look horrible, like a cheap flimsy motocross mudguard.

The one posted by nferrar doesn't look too bad, do they do them in a normal colour >_<

Yeah fork mounted ones can look a bit naff but I figure I'm buying them to avoiding getting overly muddy in the woods so being seen by lots of people isn't high on my list of worries :P Normal crud catcher down tube ones do work well enough though to not really *need* fork mount ones but they do offer a bit more coverage, especially when the wheel is turning.

these are Topeak Defenders nearest to the camera and you can see my Dirt monkeys on the bike furthest away.

You'll have to paste the address into your browser. the forum doesn't like the whole URL for some reason:

  • I bought a front fork mounted guard from lidl and it was bloomin great as it actually fitted my forks unlike the topeak one. But I failed to keep it tightened up and it came off mid ride. how I didn't notice I have NO idea. Looking to get a front crud catcher and use large elastic bands to fit round my frame. On the rear I have nothing. full sus marin with 6" so it rubs on the wheel on a jump etc no matter how high I have the saddle.
  • THE fender on the front & crud guard at the back. The THE fender looks pretty moto so I don't mind having it fitted all year. Front Crud Catchers are ok but don't work as well as fork mounted fenders.

  • Is there anywhere to buy THE front guards these days?
  • They were available from Chain Reaction Cycles! :)

made out of flexible plastic that twists and bends, that's why they are so good. i have hit loads stuff with them and they just bend and pop back.
