My helmet stinks.

What can safely clean them? I've worn it in the shower to see if that helps but I'm worried that soap/hot water might damage it.

Can you get new foam pads? It's a specialized.

Buy a new one. Job done!

Although you might want to wash it a bit more frequently in future.:lol:

  • Wasn't there a tip in C+ suggesting just keeping it on when you jump in the shower!!! 2 bird with one stone if you happen to slip in the tub, although there is the dilema of, would you take more riskes in the shower whilst wearing the lid????

yeah, i guess it could leave you feeling a little too safe and therefore take some risks in there...

I sprayed the inside of my helmet with some Grangers odour eliminator. Though it's meant for shoes, so maybe not such a good idea. It worked though.
Or how about this? As it says it's recommended for cycle helmets.

It was a suggestion by an Aussie who first questioned whether us Poms actually shower after a ride anyway. The suggestion was to place it upside-down on the floor of the shower and let the water/soap/shower gel cascade over it as it falls off you. Can't see that would harm the helmet as it'll only get as wet as in a good downpour anyway.

Wipe the straps down after each use, and the inserts. Baby wipe at work, soap and water at home !
  • Puttiing smelly stuff in the freezer can help. This can kill or slow down the bugs that make the smell.
May be worth looking in a motorbike shop as they sell stuff to cope with similar motorbike gear problems.
I have found that just wasking doesn't seem to work. Alchohol gel as in dry hand wash stuff seems to work better.

  • I wash my straps with soapy water (being careful not to get the helmet too wet) and just leave it hanging too dry.

Dunno about putting it in the fridge. The mouldy cheese might assimilate it...
  • I've ordered a new helmet (1/2 price sale hurrah) and will endeavour to wear it in the shower from now on!
  • i've heard of dishwashers being used
