Just bought a second hand Trek 6500SLR. It has Magura Julie Hydraulic disc brakes. The brakes at the minute are very unresponsive, the pads and rotor seem in good nick so I think that they may need bleeding.

What is the best way to go about this, Is it worth purchasing a Magura Bleeding kit and doing yourself? Any good maintenance websites.. or would taking it to a my LBS be a better option, the only problem is i rang my LBS and they said the seals may need replacing and they would have to send them directly to Magura. Is there a way to identify if this maybe the case..

Iirc chain reaction cycles will be able to service them for you, no need to send them all the way back to Magura.
  • If the seals have gone then there'd be leaks I'd of thought. As a guess, I'd say it sound like your brakes need bleeding...but that's just a guess. The Magura bleed kit's 20 quid from Chain Reaction.

If you're not happy about buying a bleed kit and/or don't want to bleed your brake(s), then I'd take your bike to a good LBS and see what they reckon.

I believe that Magura UK have a very good turnaround on servicing. Maybe you could give them a ring Bugsey? I've found that they're very helpful indeed whenever I've needed to ask a question or two.

    Good Luck
