Gear shifter compatibility...

I should know the answer to this, but my memory fails me.... Will the current Shimano 105 rear mech (short cage) work with shimano XT mtb 8 shifters?

    any shimano rear shifter will work with any mtb/road mech (of the same speed)

    front mechs are different though

    You may get chain rub in the cage if using a 10sp mech with an 8sp chain but otherwise it will work fine.

    ....and if you did get some rub then you could always use a 9spd chain, which works fine on a 8spd cassette
