Protein - Any bars/drinks that taste nicer?
Have no doubt these work (feel much better the day after if I take them) but do any taste nice?
I've tried Powerbar Protien Plus bars and SIS Rego, but both make me want to chuck up!

"JC's TREK" bars are ace and packed with goodness all round. Chocolate Brownie flavour is tops but the Berry one and even the Peanut flavour are nice too. Not too sweet and sugary.
I LOVE them...

Not too sure about commercial bars coz I take flapjacks with me but if you're looking for a drink then I have the Powerbar Recovery powder (chocolate) which is pretty tasty mixed with milk.0

Torq are fine for me. Nice chewy apricot bars. Grapefruit energy drink.0

is this in the right section?
or do these bars have faces/eyes on them?0 -

You might be surpried to know that there is another source of energy and protien
that is largely overlooked. It's called real food. Studies have shown that eating
actual food is even good for you. Give it a try sometime.

Ok so this is a first post on this forum.
here's my 2p worth. High five protien bars are nice and not too pricey. Myoplex chocolate cream protein drink is realy nice (tastes like baileys without alcohol).
Or if you read some of the current sci literature, Mars milkshake works just as well as SiS rego for recovery, tastes nice and is half the price with no lumps. :P0 -
I've noticed that if I have a Protein drink, my recovery happens about 20 hours after taking the drink. It's to such a uniform matter that I take a drink about 17 hours before a big effort. The legs after the effort are as bad as usual but within 2-3 hrs the recovery hits in. Protien takes time to work and get into the system so takes a while to get the benefits . This is what I've found and as unscientific as it gets but worth looking at all the same. Protien shakes are easy to take post race unlike Chicken or a lovely tin of Tuna; Yummy??
Tescos do a nasty Cheddar Cheese that is 1% FAT!! High Protien too.

There are several of us at work using protein or carb supplements and whatever else we believe will make us faster and/or stronger. Not just cyclists but we all order different protein drinks. Taste does seem to be the deciding factor obviously as well as the amount and quality of protein in the drink. I dont know how to do the quotes thing yet, re DennisN and eating actual food. Proper food is very good at providing energy and protein yes but mixing a protein drink takes 60 seconds has minimal washing up afterward and tuna fish and chicken breast get very boring after a while.
I dont rely on protein shakes as my only source however, I have just had a huge tuna salad granary roll for lunch and will have a shake after this evenings ride.
Yes I know I said tuna gets boring but its my GF's coffee shop so I have to go there as its a block away from my work so no excuses and they had run out of Honey Mustard Chicken. :roll:0 -
I get all my supps from http://www.myprotein.co.uk/ if you get the unflavoured stuff its on £35 for 5kg. Tastes nice.
At the end of the day protein is protein.
Obviously diet is key and the "magic beans" should only be consumed when a meal is hard to come by. You can get mrp's/meal replacments but again these are not a complete meal.0 -

I use this to make my own protein bars.
To make them you need;
1 large jar of honey,
1 similar sized jar of peanut butter
protein powder
porridge oats,
Empty the honey and peanut butter into a large microwaveable bowl, place in the microwave and heat on full power for 2.5 -3 minutes.
Remove from the microwave and stir the contents until the peanut butter has fully melted.
Start adding the protien powder a little at a time until you have a very stiff consistancy (I normally manage to add around 300 -350 grams using 450g jars of peanut butter and honey).
When this is done start adding the oats, this works best if you knead them into the mixture using your hands (be careful though as the mixture could still be quite hot) you will know when you've added enough as all of the mixture will stick together and not to the bowl.
Remove the mixture from the bowl and into a 9x13 inch baking tray. you can now leave it to cool a little then cut it to size I normally make this into 15 equal sized bars. wrap indiviually in cling film and keep in the fridge. They will easily keep like this for a couple of weeks.
If you want to add more taste you can add raisins or choc chips to taste.0
