Problem ultegra shifter

My two-year old 10 speed right shifter has started playing up when going down through the gears - I have lost the last three or four gears!

If I give a gentle tug on the exposed cable, I can hear a 'click', and then I can drop down to the next gear. There seems to be plenty of tension in the cable, which is clean, and freely moving through the guides.

Any ideas out there?

  • turn bike upside down, spray gizzards liberally with WD40, leave to soak in, then clean up and lube with a light oil.

Why buy Campag? He wants some gears that work, not some lightweight Italian boswelox! Really, the only choice for gears is SRAM Red

As for fixes, have a look inside the STI and see if the cable end has become unseated from the wee little holder that anchors the cable. Happened to me once (I have no idea how) and it was a devil to fix.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

McBain - clearly never seen the inside of an Ergo lever in comparison to an STI then? When complexity and number of parts directly correlates to the chance of it failing, the STI is more likely to go wrong. As for SRAM RED - really, have you even seen one, never mind tried one - I'll have 2 pairs of Record shifters please for the same money.

In terms of the dodgy STI, give it a liberal dose of WD40/GT85 as well as checking the inner and outer cables to make sure they slide smoothly. If that doesn't work, sadly the innards of STIs are unserviceable - try and find a replacement lever on ebay or Chain Reaction sell them singly.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Thanks for all the advice! Ridden Shimano for many years without problems - will give the lever a good soak in lube and see if that makes any difference! :?:

You may have worn through the liner in the rear outer cable. This gives a lot of drag when the cable is in tension but very little when it is not. Try a new outer or even just twist the outer so the cable is running on the unworn section on the other side of the bend. It will probably go back to where it was after a while as it will now have a 'set' on it. I had a similar problem with DA shifters a few years back and this cured it. Much cheaper than new STIs. :)

I have shimano on 3 bikes, all work perfectly and done loads of miles.
Funny how in races on climbs all the clunking and grating gear shifting I have heard so far have been campag? 8)
