Rim/tyre help!

Hi.

I have Mavic X139 rims on my bike and have just purchased some 2.35 tyres. I have plenty of clearance for the tyres on my frame etc., but there is a sticker on the rims giving pressure guides for tyres 1.5 - 2.1.

Now, does that mean that the max. tyre I can put on there is 2.1? To be honest, they don't look that much bigger than the Tioga 1.95 Factory XC's I had on.

If I did put 2.35 on them, would I be running the risk of the tyre coming off when cornering? Is there more chance of the valve area on the inner tube being damaged? I do intend to get new wheels in the near future, but I am currently giving the credit card a breather before another battering. :?

On another note, the wife's bike has Mavic X117 rims, which have pressure guides for 1" - 2.3" but the rims look no thicker than my X139's.

Why run the risk? if you put tyres on that are too big for your rim, then you risk the tyre rolling off the rim while you're riding...with all the consequences that brings...hospital food being one.
I'd say it would be prudent to stick to your rim's designed/stated capabilities.

  • Thanks for the advice.

I can do the falling off bit without the need of any extra help! :?

The tyres are Maxxis High Roller Single Ply.
