hey, my local petrol station is offering nitrogen tyre inflation, this method of inflation works well on f1 cars but does anyone know the effect it would have on my riding?(all mountain/ trail)

cheers

    so what is your question?

do you know why they use nitrogen in car tyres?

if you did you would not be asking about this for a push bike.

  • I use a mix of Nitrogen and Oxygen (78 to 20) and find that it's best for XC ;)

i think you will find a touch of CO2 in there as well.

Argon is where its at ;-)

never knew that about F1 cars Nick, you'll have to explain! All I can think of is that its something to do with the gas expansion under temp.

F1 i can not discuss as i dont know what they play with. but in the enduro racing we used Nitrogen as it does not expand as much with heat as regular AIR.

on a push bike or even the average car it is a waste of time/effort and money.

  • I purposely left out the other constituents etc so people could pick me up on it ;)

Perhaps I should have be more detailed, thus::

    Nitrogen (N2) 780,840 ppmv (78.084%)
    Oxygen (O2) 209,460 ppmv (20.946%)
    Argon (Ar) 9,340 ppmv (0.9340%)
    Carbon dioxide (CO2) 383 ppmv (0.0383%)
    Neon (Ne) 18.18 ppmv
    Helium (He) 5.24 ppmv
    Methane (CH4) 1.745 ppmv
    Krypton (Kr) 1.14 ppmv
    Hydrogen (H2) 0.55 ppmv

Not forgetting the odd bit of pollution between friends
    ;)
  • I seem to remember from a past life they fill rifle scopes with nitrogen...can't remember why though...

When we wake up in the morning, we have two simple choices. Go back to sleep and dream, or RIDE.

    The choice is yours...
  • Right, now got to get my goggles filled with dry Nitrogen.
