Shimano XT shadow mech (gs)

Hi, i was speaking to a sales dude from ultimate pursuits regarding the shadow rear mech (medium cage) and was told that they wouldnt work on a triple chainset because of the new design, basically because of the pivot point below the mech hanger, no matter what gearing on your cassette/chainset you are using, in my case 11-23 cassette ultegra w/xt chainset ('08 xt 44,32,22), currently using a meduim xt (M760) without any probs. Seems a bit strange to me that they would limit the usage, has anyone got a medium cage shadow jobbie or can anyone shed some light on the situation. CHeers dudes/dudesses

sounds right. what is the range of the mech? and your gears? medium is ok for 2 at the front as a general rule of thumb."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

9 spd mech, 27spd, im not having any issues with my current medium cage mech but im unsure if its something to do with new design of the shadow mech, dont want to buy it if its not gonna work, range according to shimano website is max front diff 22t (which is what i have) and rear is max 32t and 11t (my setup is currently 23t - 11t) so i cant see how it wont work, its the same spec/range as the XT M760 i have now, but new design is why i was told it wont work?? could be it was a f#*kwit on the phone who i spoke to and didnt have a clue what he was on about, it wouldnt be the first time..0

It's entirely likely it was a mistake on the part of the guy on the phone - I'd always take Shimano's written releases over the word of someone at Madison.
The general rule of thumb is a short cage for a single ring, medium for double and long for triple. If you didn't tell the guy on the phone that you had a very tight cassette (unusual on a triple), then he might have just been going on that basis.0 -
The bloke on the phone was aware of my gearing setup and told him that i currently had a medium cage mech already installed but he still said it was to do with the new design and the pivot point, its no biggie, but always found that the gear shifting was that bit sharper/crisper with a medium cage mech on.0

I'm using XT medium shadow on an 11-32 XT cassette with XT (triple) cranks. No worries.0
