is it possible to remove and renew pivot bearings myself on my 04 stumpjumper, or do they have to be pressed in with a special tool? i would like to try it with mabe a few modded tools that i could conjure up, or is it a definite lbs job?

thanks

  • yeah you can take them out pretty easily with a socket/hammer/goat, theyre called bushes and you need to find the inside diameter of them for when you order some newuns

Need to be careful putting them back to ensure you don't damage the whole they fit in.

When we wake up in the morning, we have two simple choices. Go back to sleep and dream, or RIDE.

    The choice is yours...

yeah i thought about a g clamp and a socket to gently press them in? i have van load of tools nut bolts etc so will think off something if that proves difficult.
  • The larger bearings can be pressed in and extarcted with 2 correctly sized sockets and some threaded bar. But the Horst link bearings have a lip between the bearing seats.
This means you can't just push the 2 bearings through from one side to t'oher.
You'll need the correct sized blind bearing puller for these, even if you dismantle them. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging the bearing seats.

It's best to send it into a shop for this job. Not least because, if they mess it up, you can get them to sort it for free.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
