Hi,
I was planning on buying my first road bike, I can stretch to around £600-£700 and had looked at the Boardman comp in Halfords. It looks reasonable enough. Just wondering if there is anything else around that price that would be better/value.
I also noticed it has a compact chainset, is this better or a beginner?
Thanks in advance

I have a Boardman Comp Road bike. I have done around 250 miles on it since I bought it a week ago, and I love it!!!
Many people on here dont want to like them because of the Halfords connection, but if you get a good "mechanic" to set it up for you before collection, you will be fine.
There is a review on the very same bike in Cycling+ this month I believe. Im intending to buy a copy this afternoon to see what they have to say.
I do wish it had a triple though. I have managed to get up all the hills I have ridden, including some big steep ones, but it would have been more pleasurable with a triple!!

C+ gave it 9/10, best buy in its price category. It did have some minor criticism about the gearing but overall said it was a very fine piece of kit.0

I'd recomend a Secialized Allez or 2007 Allez Sport for that money.
Or a Trek 1000 or Trek PilotRichard

Which other models did test it against??0 -
The Boardman Comp was tested against the following,
Cube Aerial Comp £499 9 out of 10
Pinnacle Sentinal 1.0 £499 7 " " 10
Specialized Allez Sport £699 8 " " 10
Boardman Comp £599 9 " " 10 *** AND RATED BEST BUY ***
It was given a very good write up in cycling plus,
Read the other forum about the Boardman bikes, although i think some people were quick to knock them without knowing anything about them. This test was made by people who are experts and who do this for a living. [don't just ride 2-3k bikes]
One thing was apparent though, check the assembly has been carried out correctly before riding. hope this helps, regards, scurry0 -

Agree with davelakers bike itself looks ok and most bad comments seem to be bike set up problems more than anything else.As mentioned before Specialized and Giant also do good bikes in this price range. If it's your first road bike I would keep of internet buying as you don't really know what size frame/ handbar reach you will be suited to.May be time to suss out a good, reliable local bike shop who could show you whats on offer.0
