is the spacing between cogs on a 6 and 7 speed freewheel the same?

i have just aquired a 1995 dawes stirling (brand new unused) and want to convert it over to flat bars.
it is currently running 3x6 but i can pick up some very cheap Shimano revoshift 7 speed shifters and am not sure if they would be compatible? i was just intending to set it up so you couldenet select seventh.

8 is one sprocket more than 7

so it would be reasonable to assume that 7 is one more than 6

and 6/7/8 spd chains are identical, which would also support this view

    Don't know for definite though

You'll just have one spare 'click' on your shifters - perhaps you can trade it to someone who wants to convert from 9 to 10 speed? :D

According to the bible on mixing different numbers of gears at http://ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3946 it's different (why do people reply when they don't actually know?) 6 speed is 5.5mm between cogs, 7 speed is 5mm between cogs. So no it won't work. However the table there would suggest that it can be made to work by rerouting the cable at the rear mech - the "old Dura Ace" mod.

Opps i had better tell my hack bike to stop working then.

either that or i have some magic spinone cluster. or some magic twist grip changer.

ok it is only used to go to the shops/pub etc but works fine.

but as that chart implies that the spacing is different and you would be way out at one end of the cluster when set correctly at the other end.
