I'm commuting around London for a year now with a fairly hefty load on my back (a musical instrument actually!). One of my back straps has just split, just wondering if anyone has any recommedations? Had a look on some hiking sites but can't see any suitable ones without buying the rucksacks that they come on!

  • Your usual outdoor shops won't sell what you'll need. I would suggest finding a soldier of fortune or some other "military" based outfitter if you need spares.

As well as catering for military fantacists and loonies, I was surprised to find that they actually do get the odd actual professional soldier using them so they stock a wide range of webbing, buckles, harnesses and quality gear amongst all the hunting knives and SAS badges.

Have you tried the backpack manufacturer? If you have a recognised brand (Karrimor, Berghaus etc) they offer repair services which are very reasonable. See their websites for details
  • Ask some law students maybe?
  • Try Lancashire Sports Repairs.

They've been very good when I've used them.

    Alaric.
  • id suggest binning that sack and going down the army surplus store and by a second hand army issue one. They are a lot stronger and designed to carry heavy loads. You will be surprised the number of different sizes that are on offer.

  • If you're in London (where is that, a small village in Essex? ), try Silvermans in Mile End, they have a good reputation (or did have) with the Army.

Expensive though, there are a lot cheaper on line.

  • Suggest you might try a yacht Chandlers, most will supply strap buckles needles and twine, and will post out to you
