SRAM X7 to X9 rear mechs

A mate of mine has offered me a SRAM X9 rear mech. What should i be looking for when buying second hand? How can i tell if it is 8 or 9 speed? Will it be an easy replacement for my current X7? Its a short cage version and my X7 is a medium cage, will it make any difference? Ive got so many questions......please help!!!! :oops: :?

what bike? how many gears.
it is both 8/9 it does not matter.

If you are running 27 gears then a short cage mech will be too small.0
