Steel deterioration

My Orange Clockwork is 8 years old now, and I think it's less stiff than it was. Is this possible? Does steel sort of 'degrade' and become less stiff? Or would it be where all the other parts join the frame?

    steel does rust.

    if you have not protected it against rust it could be in a poor state internally.
