Pedals and Shoes

I'm just about to put my request in for a nice new Boardman Team through the Halfords bike scheme, I've got a list of things that I will be adding straight away, however, with the wet weather we have had this year I have too many foot/pedal slipping incidents on my daily commute.
I'm a bit wet behind the ears when it comes to some of the technical side of things, I've got the bike decision sorted now after a number of tests, however, shoe and pedal combinations are not something I profess to knowing much about.
I commute 10 miles each day and take the bike cross country on the odd weekend, what is going to be a good, basic, beginners option for me to go for in regards to pedals and some cleated sole shoes? I have a fair few traffic lights to stop at on my journey so a set up that is easy to clip in and out of would be best (not even sure if that should be a consideration!!!)

I don't have SPD shoes/pedals myself but I do know that with the official shimano SPD pedals you can reduce the force required to twist your shoe off the pedal by turning a small adjustment screw. I would leave the pedals as 'slack' as possible while you are learning to use them so they are easy to 'escape' from. Thats what I will do when I get around to buying some!Specialized Rockhopper '07

Cheers. Escaping will be the main priority whilst I get used to them I think....I'm bad enough with toe clips!!0

I recommend you try merlin as they have some bloody good shoe+pedal bargains at the mo. I got some shimano spd shoes and a pair of M520's for £44.0

Had the toe clip without the strap for 6 years-never fell off.
Had shoes and clips for two weeks fell off 3 times and nearly castrated myself.
Back on toe clips-not fallen off , mate has now got a spare set of pedals!!
friends swear by clips I just never felt safe in them and thought about nothing but unclipping all the time spoiling my enjoyment of cycling. It was when you had to do it unexpectedly that I couldn't deal with.0 -
You just need to reprogramme your brain to kick out your heels before you stop.
It'll still take a few comedy falling off moments to get there,though!2006 Giant XTC
