Dear all

I'm in the fortunate position of having saved about £3000 towards my new bike,. I would like carbon and will use it for sportifs and shorter triathlons. I favour comfort over speed. I want dura ace. Can the forum recommend a frame and wheels to match this groupset. I liked the look oF Argon but would welcome your suggestions

thanks

I am biased but well here is my suggestion. What about a Storck Scenario 1.1 or 0.9. The frames will set you back £1250 and £1650 respectively. They can only be got in Britain from www.poshbikes.com. I got they frame(0.9) from posh bikes through a dealer in Scotland and kitted it out with full dura-ace group set, Kysrium ES wheels and finished off with cinelli ram bars. My bike handles like a dream and sticks to the road like glue and not one ounce of power is wasted as you can really feel the difference when climbing or when you need to sprint. It gives great feedback when descending and really boosts confidence as you know how far you can push it.

Dont take my word for it read some reviews about the Storck Scenario's or phone Wally at poshbikes as what he told me was spot on. You will not get a better frame for your cash. I really liked the Argon 18 as well and it was on my final list when choosing my frame.

    Hope this helps.
    Brian B.
  • Most people are probably just pee'd off that you have 3 grand to spend on a bike!!!

If I were spending that sort of cash I'd be looking at Storck or Isaac for something a little bit different/special.

    Happy shopping........git!!!

Your question is actually impossible to answer, pader. In the price bracket you are aiming at all the bikes will be good, you are going for the top of the market. The only thing I would suggest is to try and get some test rides and see what you are happy with yourself.
  • yes, it's another dull "test ride them" answer ... b/c fit and feel is so important.

on the wheels, if you really want comfort then i'd recommed campag neutron ultras. light and very comfy, and, based on their predecessors, the neutrons, able to withstand all but a direct nuclear hit ... others will say handbuilt with dura ace or campag hubs, DT/cx-ray spokes, and mavic open pro rims. personally i'd go factory built

if you want comfort in a high end carbon frame at your price point then on your list to consider should be:

    Look 585
    Cervelo R3
Specialized S-Works Roubaix SL (don't like the way it looks myself)

Possibly the new Trek Madones as well if you don't mind the brand.

    One of these?

Casati are a) rare in the UK and b) beautifully crafted bikes.

Edited: The link wasn't working so I've fixed it.

yes, that's a nice suggestion. if it was me (it has been in the past!) I would go for something that isn't too common ... that would definitely rule out specialized, trek, giant and maybe cervelo as well.

De Rosas and Pinarellos are also very easy on the eye. the high end pinas get exceptionally good reviews. A Paris might fit your requirements?
  • If comfort is more of a priority then perhaps something exquisite in Ti?

Surprised no-one's suggested a Colnago C50 . . . reliably informed it rides supremely well and goes like the proverbial off a shovel. Nice pair of carbon wheels on there and you're away (though whether £3k covers all of that is a different question).

But don't just consider carbon fibre - if it cracks there's not much bike left - steel and titanium can offer a less stiff performance (but if you're not racing, do you need that stiffness) and, if you crash, you can just knock the dinks out rather than buy yourself a whole new frameset.

In titanium, Van Nicholas is affordable with Dura Ace (and customisable from the website), Litespeed less so (and I'm not sure I like the red stripe they've introduced this year).

Steel's much harder to find these days but they're out their if you look.

Have a look at Argon 18 (the Gallium S3 and the Platinum), Pinarello, De Rosa and Storck. All nice frames, well the carbon ones anyway.
  • I am looking for a new bike too, but not quite as high a budget but the two I have narrowd it down too today! (and I am sure it will change) are Willier and the new Trek Madone.

I picked me up a Bianchi C2C Carbon Veloce not quite as expensive as Pader's price range but if I could of afforded it I had like one of their more expensive Titanium jobs. The C2C is there comfort range but they are still fast bikes.

When spending that amount of money the options are boundless.
You mentioned comfort being important, for the uses you were mentioning i would go for a Titanium framed bike.
It 's a lot of money but the frames are extremely comfortable, durable, won't rust and i have read they can last a lifetime. [as often their warranty reflect].
They can also be extremely versatile,
that's what i've heard anyway, regards,

  • If you ask me get a Cervelo R3 frame, about £1500 from cyclexpress, then spec it out with top level light bits and bobs

Hondas are always reliable, maybe a 2nd hand VFR?

I assume for £3K you are talking about a motorbike!!!:lol::lol:

"comfort over speed" is a requirement - sounds like titanium should be in the mix for the frame
