Hi Everyone. I'm after some advice on some new wheels. My old ones are pretty heavy so i'm looking for a new set for mostly cross country and road use and i'd like something fairly light. I've got around £200 to blow on them.
Cheers

  • That money couldn't get you Hope Pro's I dont think so you might have to get something like-

Not the lightest but you can afford them

Sorry my mind has gone blank cant think of any thing else, sorry
  • How about looking at the wheels on this link:

Hope Pro 2's on Mavic rims look like an option for your budget :)
  • I'm liking the look of those hope pros on the mavic rims but i need to ask a no doubt silly question. Would i have to buy a separate cassette to go with these and which would be reccommended? Cheers

I think (although I could be wrong) only XT cassettes are recommended for Hope Pro2 hubs because the cassette has an alloy carrier. Apparently steel cassettes dig into the freehub body, causing little chips and gouges, eventually the cassette becomes impossible to remove from the hub.
  • e aware that if you go for Hope Pro 2s you need to budget another £25 for the skewers.Choose balck rims and spokes and thats another £12.

Have you looked at the XT/DT4.2 package for £125 on Merlin?

Change left over to buy a lightwr Xt cassette, and new lighter tyres!

Sounds like an excellent plan to me, but how are DT4.2's different to XC717's? I've got 717's myself and wonder what the differences are.
  • Just ordered a set of XTR wheels from Merlin (on DT Swiss 4.2d)

    Aren't they a little lighter than 717s?

Anyhoo, I just fancied a change from Mavic!

All my wheels have been Mavic, good and all that but heard good things about DT
  • Correction

    Mavic 717s - 395g

    DT Swiss 4.2 - 400g

Yes but you will find the 4.2s a little stiffer than 717's.
If those are the M975 hubs that is a damn nice wheelset

Oh yes, those are the ones!
  • DT 4.2s are a little wider too,and will better support a 2.3 tyre.

XTR on 717 with DT rev spokes!

Just costed them out as £242 on Merlin ,if you go for black disc rims and black spokes, too.Very tasty wheels for the money, and should be a very decent weight too.Almost tempted myself! 8)

Of course, they are centrelock hubs so,unless you are already running Shimano centrelock discs you will need to budget for splined to 6 bolt adaptors too, which will be £20 or so.

Bit over budget, but still good value. We are always good at spending other people's money,on this forum aren't we?

  • Very true....

I ordered some M975 XTR center lock rotors (didn't go down the adapter route) to run with my Juicy Carbons - but they still worked out £18 each so the wheelbuild (from merlin) came to £244 + £36 = £280..... keeps getting more expensive.

Was going to go originally with XC717s but fancied a little change.

I won't be running large tyres at all on the 4.2's, looking for 2.1 largest but better still 2.0 if I can find anything suitable in that size....
