What are the advantages of a compact crankset vs the standard 39-53?

  • Smaller gears than standard 53/39 and it's a lot less ugly than a triple!

Basically you can get bigger range of gears 34 inner vs 39. With a 11-25T cassette you've got a some nice low climbing gears and still got a pretty big gear for sprints/downhill.

    - explains it really well.

I'd go for a 48 outer myself unless time trialling, a 14-tooth change is better than a 16-tooth one.

I had a 50/36 which i would also say is a good option, as Uranus said, a 14 tooth jump is preferable. Can't see anyone buying a compact chainset with the intention of using it for TTing though.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.

no, definitely not, but 50/12 is I think a 107" gear (from memory) and you have to be going some to spin that out. Some people seem to think that if you have 50 or 48 on the front that you're going to be slow!
