Does anyone know a good place to buy a secondhand steel frame (and forks) for my first crack at building up a fixie. Horizontal dropouts and a lack of rust preferable. Not had much luck on eBay or with various classified ads sections (I am pretty crap at searching stuff out though).
I've seen some modern frames by EAI, On-one, Fixie inc etc but would prefer to get myself a second hand frame for my first pop at this.

P.S. if anyone reading this has just such a frame for sale give me a shout :) .. somewhere in the region of a 58cm frame would be perfect

For horizontal dropouts you're looking at a 10-15 year old frame at least. They do crop up on Ebay, but also try your LBS or junk day on the market or the police stolen bike dump.

Vertical dropouts are much easier to come across and there are chain combinations which will work. www.sheldonbrown.com has lots on this. I think most of us fixie riders prefer horizontals, though.

Or you could even splash out and get a custom titanium frame from China with track dropouts for £300 or so, delivered. www.xacd.com.cn

  • Have you tried the local bike shops? The one i go to has absolutely loads of old steel frames which have been sand-blasted and painted up cheap or old bikes which they've not dismantled yet - generally only ever ask £30-50 for them. This is Birmingham though; the 'fixie craze' doesn't exist here. Actually, you'd think bikes don't exist here with some of the looks you get
  • Go to a bike shop, preferably one that is "old school" and doesn't have lots of shiny bikes in the window and ask. i recently got a Dawes Horizon for £40 which has been just what I needed as I wanted to have mudguards.

You can get a new cheap new fixed frame here:

  • Cheers for the tips all. I think I've got lucky and a mate has said he'll give me an old peugot. Haven't seen it yet so fingers crossed it's in a decent state.
