Hong Kong - Lantau

I'm off on a business trip to Hong Kong early next month and will have a weekend to twiddle my thumbs. I know cycling in Hong Kong itslef is pretty pointless and downright dangerous, but I've found a few links suggesting that a half decent day can be had touring around Lantau island. Do any of you have any experience of doing this and where to hire bikes, and where to go etc?

I used to live on Lantau island, for 3 years, took it totally for granted as i was still a snotty teenager back then.
Strangely i never cycled around the hills though. I was probably worried about being captured by some vietnamese cannibals living in the trees or something, i was a complete pothead back then
To get to Lantau you will catch a 30min ferry from the central ferry port. once on Lantau you wont need to wory about getting run over, since everybody gets around on golf carts  im not shitting you.
Im not sure if there are purpose trails out there tbh, very woody indeed once you get past civilisation.
Have fun though, HK is amazing, im rather envious actually !
Make sure you have a meal on the Jumbo floating restaurant in Aberdeen harbour at night, spectacular :P

I lived in HK for 10 yrs though never cycled much.
If you take the MTR to Shatin there are many hire shops for MTB's. There is a cycle track parallel to highway all the way to Tai Po and beyond. Scenic views of harbours and mountains. If you fancy the roads, Shatin to Sai kung is not too bad and throws in some hills. I have ridden this route with inexperienced riders - 12 yrs ago so traffic probably busier but I would guess not by much as there are no malls - lol.
