Hi All,

Has anyone used these as a winter tyre? What are they like in the wet, are they grippy etc etc?

Cheers

You can either have no punctures or a grippy responsive tyre, but not both I'm afraid - Armadillos are notorious for having little grip in the wet, are pretty heavy and feel like they're filled with wet cement.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Not armadillos but I've put close to 2000miles this year on a set of Schwalbe City Jets running them at 90psi. Ridden in all weathers with no problems and not punctured once...

I'm fairly sure they have been replaced with a new version so they can be had for a bargain at wiggle.

I think it depends on which Armadillos. I use the Specialized All Conditions Pro. It has "Flak Jacket" protection. They say:
All Condition Pro Tyre A super-fast road racing tyre with great traction. No other tire matches the All Condition's combination of low rolling resistance, wet and dry cornering performance, and puncture protection. The Technical Aspects Motorcycle-inspired design raised center crown pro-file for minimal straight-line contact (more speed) Proprietary cornering shoulder for maximal contact (more traction) in turns Exclusive Flak Jacket aramid/elastomer subtread extrusion reduces flats by 60% with less than 1gm weight penalty Low rolling resistance, hard center compound (68 Shore A durometer) for speed and durability 120 tpi Nylon Casing Aramid Bead

It is a sophisticated tyre, note it has dual compound rubber and 120tpi (double that of cheaper ones, making it more supple). Mine have performed faultlessly and without punct*ure all year long. I reckon they do what they say on the box (just pump it up high enough!). The folding ones are light.

I just read that they are All conditions...which would suggest they were a wet weather tyre as well...oops...doh....etc etc

I think the All Conditions Pro is a better tyre, same price, or thereabouts (Wiggle don't have them at the mo, but others do).
  • Hi
I had a bad winter with numerous p******es using 25mm Continental Ultra Gatorskins. About 3 months ago I changed to Specialized Roubaix 23/25mm inflated to 100psi. So far so good with no problems, although I haven't yet ridden them over a winter season. I've found the ride on these to be fine and I actually prefer them to the Gatorskins.
Having read numerous posts on the advantages of the Gatorskins I was very dissapointed with them but I wonder if perhaps different road surfaces suit different tyres. I ride mostly on canal paths and country lanes.
