Bike Boxes...
I'll be looking to buy a hard case bike bag/box in the not too distance future - can anyone advise on a decent model for £100-£175? Also, what bits do you have to take off to store your bike - I know pedals, wheels and saddle, but what else? I'm presuming the bars, but are they undone where the stem clamps onto them, or the headset end?

I removed wheels, pedals, rear-mech, seat/seatpost, bars, front brake and bottle cages! I might have been over-cautious, but I'd rather spend an extra 30 mins reassembling the bike rather than risk something getting bent.
Removing the chain is also an option if you've got a split link, as it saves it getting tangled. I removed the bars at the "front" (stem cap), and put some masking tape on the bars with a little arrow to show the exact position when putting them back on...you can also do this with the seatpost.
Don't forget the plastic spacers between the rear dropouts and for the front forks...0 -
Seven of us went to Italy in the summer with seven bikes in seven boxes and the bikes all needed different degrees of dismantling. I had an integrated seat post and had to take off the crankset so suggest you try out a box if you have an ISP or large frame rather than buy online. Most boxes wouldn't have taken my Medium ISP frame.
If you have a nomal size frame and using the box rarely then the Wiggle box for 100 quid is OK.

Apologies. Wiggle/DHB box now about £150. Still OK.0

if you can stretch to it, then the sci-con box really is in a different league.
lots of room. very solid.
not sure if it would fit an ISP bike though.0 -
Sorry - what's ISP an acronym for?Knackered? Me?0

You also need to consider the weight of the box if you are using it to fly with.
Some but not all airlines will hit you with weight penalties as you will easily exceed the 25kg limit with most boxes.
A few airlines consider these as sports equipment (like a set of golf clubs) and don't charge.
Personally, that's why I use pipe lagging foam and a soft case.0 -
The baggage handlers at the airports love these things!! Dont be too suprised if your bike box is trashed when you get home , they are too bulk to lift comfortably so they just rough handle them. ps good luck!0
