Shimano STI problem

Hi I am having problems with my front STI (ultegra lever and mech)
The problem is with the triming or small shifting to stop the mech scraping as the rear gears are changed.
It seems to shift up ok from bottom to top, with 3 or 4 increments .
The problem occurs when I try to trim the front mech back by a small amount.
It just jumps straight back across from top to bottom.
Meaning I then have to shift it back up again
Mech is new bottom pull Ultegra.
Lever is old Ultegra but worked ok previously
cables are new
Any ideas what is wrong.

How many miles on the new cable? Front mechs are notoriously temperamental (at least mine is). It always needs adjusting after I put about 100 miles on new cables.0

I have a similar set up and also find that I can go "up" in smaller increments than I can move "down". I've got into the habit of trimming it down one and then immediately up half to adjust for a change on the cassette.0
