My lad has decided he wants a proper road bike . I've been looking at Specialised Allez or Giant SCR2 but would welcome views. Bear in mind he's still growing....

    Halfords.

What ever people say about them, they are cheap. IMO a 14-year doesn't need an expensive bike, unless they are really serious about it, which might take a year to ascertain.

I've got a carrera road bike from halfords, it's cheap, components aren't too bad. If you know how to properly set the bike up yourself I'd definitely recommend a carrera. Change of tyres and I'm more than happy. My 16yr old nephew is getting this bike next May, and he'll more than happy with it because he doesn't know about the road cycling brand snobbery (yet).

How long will a bike last a 14yr old anyway?
