Hi,

I have a girly Specialised Rockhopper which I love, I use it on tracks, trails etc and annually visiting my sister in the Alps....which is why I need to upgrade my breaks. I am no expert and the Alps petrify me - so I am burning rubber with my v-brakes!

I would love to upgrade to some disc brakes - can you recommend any??

Many thanks

What budget, and is you bike ready to take discs?
  • Budget, about £100 if poss. I think the bike is 'ready' - it has the mountings on both front & rear.

Ah, but does the hubs have mountings, and are your brakes and gear levers combined are seperate?

At that price I would look at Shimano Deore.
  • it looks like the hubs do have the mountings, the gear & brake levers are separate, the gear system is Shimano Deore.

  • I think Chain Reaction Cycles were doing Avid Juicy 3's for £40 each.

    The decores are only £40.

  • I upgraded both my wife's bike and mine to the latest 'ordinary' deore hydraulic disc this spring.
They have pads the same as the xt with a single-pin one-sided fixing, so dont confuse them with the old style.
They have been very good value, all except for pad life which is absolutely terrible, so be prepared for a sudden loss of performance and terrible squeaking when the standard pads wear out. (Having said that, we did do a lot of riding in the wet in the spring on some very gritty south-wales tracks.)
The problem with some makes of brakes is getting replacement pads when you need them
You get what you pay for, but you can also pay well over the odds for the flash factor with very little gain in performance.
  • Shimano may not be as bling as some, but they are easy to live with.Just make sure you get sintered pads once the originals wear out.

  • I think LeisureLakesBikes.com do free fitting if you buy from them and take your bike to the store (depends where you live if you're near a store). Only £7.50 per 15 min for servicing, recommended as they fixed my road bike derailleur problem in no time.
