Help needed (saracen bike)

i've recently bought a sacracen Xile, it has 16 gears, with 2 cogs at the front and 8 at the back, and i came 2 ride it to day and the grip shift for the front cogs is very tight and it doesnt change up 2 the second cog, can someone please give me advise on what 2 do with it.

could be many things.

is it new? get the shop to sort it.

used? the mech stops might need setting. cable might need replaceing........

i bought the bike second hand, but it is brand new, and i've tried altering the tension on the cable.

just 1 more thing when it was working fine, it requied 4 clicks of the grip shift 2 change gear but now, it only does 2 clicks and wont do any more,

The left hand shifter? Sounds like the cable tension needs adjusting, or the whole gear sytem setting up as nick says.

when the cable is connected to the derailleur, its as though something is stuck because the cable pulls tight and nothing happends, the derailleur is free moving so its not that. could it be something in the gripshift.

thanks for all ur help and advice i have now sorted out the front derailleur and it is working better than ever
