Tyre Bulges

I noticed a bulge in my front tyre this morning before setting off to work. The rim runs true but on closer inspection there is definitely a bulge (or egging) of the tyre. Is this an early indication of a possible tyre failure (Schwalbe Blizzard Neo Pro with approx 1200 miles) or is the problem more likely to be tube related?

  • Tyre - chuck it & get a new one.
  • I expect you will find a cut in the tread at the middle of the bulge.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano

I've only come accross one tyre bulge. It happened on a tour last year, rather than using a hire bike a girl had her own Airnimal after a couple of days on the Irish roads (Mayo) it developed on the front and gradually got worse till it dramatically exploded :o . Lucky for her it exploded on a flat and not a downhill.
  • @rse! Ah well - better safe that sorry I guess. I've given it a check over and the only cut is a small (1mm) nick accross the red tread section but nowhere near deep enough to have any impact on the casing - I suppose I'll have to put it down to 'one of those things'

The tyre could be worn or have a bit of a flat spot here which could cause the same thing - or it could be due to manufacturing unevenness. Sometimes you can feel this by running the tyre wall beween finger and thumb.

I'm assuming that it is all properly seated on the rim too as it is also possible for this to cause a bulge - but you can normally see this straight away.
I\'m sure I had one of those here somewhere

Pretty much spot on - when I took the tyre off the inner layers of kevlar had started to delaminate at the point of the bulge. It definitely felt thinner and I wonder if anyone else has suffered the same problem with these tyres? Anyway, a new pair of Fortezza Tri Comps duely fitted - a bit snug on the Fulcrum's but they went on eventually!

Or you could have hit a pothole and damaged the tyre.
