Help choosing a bike ...

I've decided to get into mountain biking. I'm moving out of London into the leafy suburbs of Maidenhead and want to take advantage of the great out doors! I've got about £400 to spend although would like to keep it under £350. I've got no idea what bike to go for or what to look out for, any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Another thought... New V's Used?? Where best to go for used bikes? is ebay reliable?
