Hi,

I've got hope minis on fron and back. today i was taking my wheel of to replace the tyres. And couldn't put the wheel back in becaue one of the pads in the caliper was stuck in. SO I took both the pads out to inspect them to see if they were worn etc. Thats when I notice that one of the barrels(they look like barrels) was stuck out and was no way to get it back in. I also noticed that the caliper was leaking hyrdrolic fluid in the center. ANy thing I can do?

kind regards

sounds like time for a seal replacement. and service.

right. how much would a good bike shop charge for this?
  • Hi,

    Not sure on LBS costs,

However, it depends how handy you are. I've just stripped and rebuilt mine, changing the seals and it's not that hard.

You need to get new seal kit (for both front and back).
Wiggle or CRC have them or your LBS might have them.
They sell a seal kit for the caliper and one for the lever. They also do a complete set which contains seals for lever and caliper for one brake. costs about £7 for the combined kit.
The only other things you'll need is for bleeding the brake after it is re-built is a length of pipe that feeds over the bleed nipple (LBS might give you one for free or pence).
Some fluid - get from a motorcycle shop (dot 4 about £3.50 for 250ml) which is enough for both brakes.
Then just a few allen keys e.t.c. normal tools -nothing specialist (oh and a pump!)

You might also want to change the pads if they have had it at the same time.

How to do it! Follow these instructions- they were fine for me and are really in depth step by step. Take your time!

I didn't look at them for the second brake and it took me about 2hrs for the first brake and not even half of that for the second brake.

Another thought - for the right fee - i.e. about 60% (+parts) of what your LBS quotes, I would do this for you.

Depends whereabouts in the UK you are - I am in Chesterfield.

    Let me know
