When to bleed brakes?

Hi.
Just recently fitted 'Avid Juicy 5' brakes and have a question about 'bleeding'. The brakes seem fine up to now (no need to bleed at fitting stage), but as these are me first set of discs...how do you know when it's time to bleed the brakes?
May be a stupid question, but as this is my first experience with disc brakes, I'm not sure what to look out for etc.
