Fitting a Chain guide

I'm looking along with other things (forks and wheels) to buy a chain guide,
I'm currently looking at the goldtec manacle:
https://www.betd.co.uk/product_list.asp?CategoryID=91
and the blackspire dew-lite
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=17297

for the blackspire I would have to get an adapter to mount the thing as I haven't got ISGC mounts on my BB
and for the goldtec I'd just jam the thing in a BB cup

but here comes the technical bits:
for both of the chain guides if it going to be really hard to get the correct chain line so I can use all gears (especially the blackspire)
can I use my current bottom bracket with no alterations and just put the adapter or boomerang in between the frame and the cup?
will I need to start messing with the derailieur setup to get the gears working as the chain line has been put off a bit?
does the jamming technique work on hollow tech cranksets and the truative external bearing type ones?

the tools I reckon I'll need for the job are:
a crank extractor
a bottom bracket removing tool

Cheers

I don't even know what they are for or how they are fitted  , anyone care to explain, some pics of these items fitted to a bike would be good too.

Are you running dual or single ring? As you have chosen a single ring device and a dual ring device?

Chain lines are a real pain to setup I went through 4 chain devices before I found one to fit my Scott Nitrous properly.

There are adaptors which allow you to fit the ISCG (there are two versions Pre 05 and post 05) you must alway go for the pre 05 ISCG fitting and this incorporates the BB to clamp the adaptor.

I recommend you use external BB cups which are used to clamp the adaptor or the chain device which uses the BB to fix it to the bike. see my pics.

Setting up the chain line can be easy with the right chain device depending if it's dual or single ring setup. Single ring takes a little longer.
All you have to remember is the thickness of the back plate of the chain device offsets the position of the rings.

    What bike do you have?
BTW the e13 comes with a bash guard that is really strong but light.

    TOOLS
    Crank puller
    BB removal spanner
External cup spanner (if you change to external cups, recommended)
Changing to external BB cups makes removing the crank really easy and quick. I can do mine in less than 5 mins.
btw you will need a compatible crankset like hollowtech 2

  • hi daxion thanks for your reply
I've got this reply from genesis my bikes manufacturer

Easiest thing is to use a hollowtech-2 BB and crank, as one of the
spacers that fits on the drive-side is to take the place of an E-type f
mech or a chain device. Fitting one to an octalink crank as on the core
1.0 can be done but the bb isn't designed to have this extra width,
although I know of people doing this on similarly set up bikes.

how cheap could all this be done including the tools needed?
I'm after a dual ring one, like the blackspire dew lite.

    thanks

Only just seen your reply, I was out riding most of yesterday, got the bruises to prove it, lol.

Personally I would opt for the e13 as they make a smaller ver down to a 36t size the Blackspire is 38t which will look massive next to a 32t ring (std size on your - and most - bike)
I know it's twice the money, but they are really worth the extra, Once fitted just forget about it. IT will keep the chain in the right place.

e13 £99 from CRC - you try the forums to see if anyone is selling one second hand. Pity really, I just sold one a few weeks back for £47

Shimano Crank Install Tool HollowTech II £4 from CRC
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=3785

Shimano Hone Cranks HollowTech II & BB M600 £65
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=6070
Includes a new BB with external cups

There is an LX version which is cheaper, but I don't know if the BB comes with it

btw don't forget you will have to remove the outer ring so you can fit the bash guard.
Remember most people change the middle ring to a 34t or 36t. I use 36t

  • hi,
    thanks for the reply.
I'm pretty sure the LX comes with the bottom bracket, I better get saving for the E13 then lol are there any bargain ones to be had anywhere?
I've asked the local bike shop for a quote on taking off the old BB and fitting the new LX one as I dont want to have to buy all the tools for octalink and use them once! my friend has all the hollowtech tools so I can go over to his to fit the chain guide.
for my two chain rings I'd probably just keep the granny and middle as they are now and take off the outer as I dont use it its more of a bash guard :p

    thanks
