Is it straight forward to change a cheapo Shimano MT - TZ07 7 speed (14 - 28T ) to a Shimano MF - HG50 ( 11 - 34 ) 7 speed freewheel on a screw-on hybrid without changing anything else to gain a bit of extra top-speed ? I.e. if I ask my local excellent bikeshop - Morreys in Holmes Chapel - to do this for me will they think I'm a d*head ?

  • As long as the inside of the freewheel clears the locknuts you should be golden. If not, the bicycle shop could probably change those as well.

With so much wider range (9 extra teeth) you might not be able to use the cross-chained positions with your current rear derailer. But, then, if it is a hybrid you might already have a long cage derailer so it wouldn't apply.
