Brake calliper drop question

I'm going to treat myself and change the 'vanilla' callipers on my Trek 1200 to either 105 or Ultegra. I've noticed that one is 49 mm drop and the other is 57mm.

Will either fit?

Or do I need to go and measure my current ones - if so, where do I measure from ?

Thanks

  • I thought that both 105 and Ultegra calipers were 49mm drop. Shimano do 57mm deep drop calipers but I dont think they are branded 105 or Ultegra.

You need to measure from the centre of the brake mounting bolt to the centre of the rim braking surface (along the centreline of the bike)

    OK.

The ones I saw at ribble said they were Ultegra R600. I'll stick to the 49 mm drop

Don't know where you got Ultegra from - no mention of it on that page! Those might be Ultegra quality, but they're not sold as such. http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/details.a ... IMBRAR0575 are normal Ultegra brakes.

Most road bikes take the shorter drop 49mm. But, I would make a quick check on your current bike which will fit. I bought, fitted to the bike and it was only when I came to put the wheels back on and check the alignment, that I realised that my wife's OCR3 needed long drop brakes. Thankfully, the shop replaced them without a problem.
  • um, is this allowed in the rules???

Anyway, I have a set of really good condition ultegra calipers for sale.

PM me if you're interested. They're the short drop ones (49mm).

Oh, and the existing calipers will probably have the length of the drop stamped into the back of them.
