Hi
I am looking at replacing my rear mech on my Marin from a LX Deore to a XTR, the shifters I have are Deore Mega. Can you tell me which XTR Rear Derailleur would fit my bike? I was looking at XTR M971 or XTR M970.
Also would it benefit me to change my shifters? If so which would suit?
Thanks

well are you changing shifters or not?
one is normal and the other is rapid rise.
so what are you doing with the shifter?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I'd stick with what you're used to and go with the M971 (I think that's the top normal model). Either will work, though.
If you can afford to change the shifters at the same time then do it. You will notice a much bigger difference in shifting performance. Go for XT or better shifters to match up with the XTR mech.0 -
Hi i would like to change the rear mech now and the shifters at a later date if possible.
Thanks0 -
Both mechs would fit fine, the M970 is a rapid rise mech (it shifts in the opposite direction to normal), M971 shifts the traditional way, your shifters will work fine, you could upgrade to LX,XT,XTR all are rapid fire plus..

I just broke my XTR rear mech (M971) and replaced it with a 2007 XT (£25). Given it only took one crash to write off the XTR I wasn't in any hurry to get a new one (although sure any crash, even at low speed, has the potential to break some bits regardless of cost). I almost bought a new XT shadow mech but figured as it was nearly twice the cost of a discounted 2007 standard one I may as well see how the standard one goes. So I'd save your money, get a bargain 2007 XT mech now and then get 2007 XT shifters when you can afford it.0

Why not buy an XT rear mech and save urself a few quid, theirs very little difference in weight and the performance difference is negligable.
Xt kit is more than up to the job0 -
I have an XTR rear mech (971 I think) and Deore Dual Control.
No probs so far!Craig Rogers0 -
I've got a Saint rapid-rise shifter and a normal XTR, the shifting is backwards but I've gotten used to it and I think I prefer it.
